Traditionally, short-run book trimming duties have been carried out by traditional guillotines but the process is time-consuming and wrought with possibilities of book damage due to operator error. Drawing on our 129 years of cutting expertise, Challenge has designed the ultimate book trimming solution necessary for today's competitive marketplace – the CMT 130.

The sturdy steel and cast-iron design of the CMT 130TC ensures years of trouble-free operation. Hydraulic clamping and cutting action provides strength to cut up to 2" (50.8mm) thick books without hesitation. Standard features such as UHMW gib surfaces, composite bushings, and stepper motor technology require virtually zero maintenance.

The industry-exclusive modularity of the CMT 130TC provides added possibilities for future growth within your organization. The system can be configured as a hand-feed off-line trimmer for entry level cost-effective book finishing. The high-capacity feeder permits up to 35.5" / 90 cm of books to be stacked and automatically fed into the trimmer. The vertical stacker allows up to 24" / 61 cm of books to be delivered. When these two items are combined, this near-line trimming solution permits the perfect binder operator to also feed and collect product from the CMT 130TC solution. COMPRESSED AIR REQUIREMENTS

The CMT-130 requires 90 PSI / 6 BAR regulated, DRY, non-lubricated compressed air at a minimum of 5 CFM / 141 LPM. Failure to use dry, non-lubricated compressed air that meets or exceeds the above requirement may cause damage to the machine and will result in the WARRANTY TO BE VOIDED.

The new Challenge CMT 330TC has expanded capability to finish cut LANDSCAPE FORMATTED BOOKS up to 12.1” tall by 12.9” wide and down to 5.875” tall by 3.937” wide. Designed and built in Michigan-USA, the CMT 330TC utilizes powerful hydraulic cutting and clamping pressure to effortlessly cut up to a 2” thick book.

The CMT 330TC utilizes servo and stepper motors to accurately position books for cutting. Full digital control of the set-up allows book size changes in less than 6 seconds. There is no need to perform manual adjustments or exchange book clamps. The CMT 330TC exclusively features simultaneous in-line and near-line feeding capability. This allows the trimmer to automatically switch between feeding books directly from an in-line perfect binder or from a manually loaded near-line book pile feeder. If one system is waiting for the next book, the other system can feed the trimmer to provide maximum production throughput.

The CMT 330TC Trimmer incorporates the most advanced book trimming technology available. The new 10.5” color touch screen display, easy to use operator interface and smart diagnostic assistance makes the CMT 330TC the leader for operational simplicity. Automatic size detection of the pre-trimmed book makes job programming easy, requiring the entry of only three dimensions. Alternatively, the integrated bar code reader can scan the trim dimensions from a pre-printed barcode on the cover to adjust the knife settings automatically. COMPRESSED AIR REQUIREMENTS

The CMT-330TC requires 80 - 90 PSI (550 - 620 kPa) regulated, dry, non-lubricated compressed air at a minimum of 9 CFM at 90 PSI (255 LPM at 620 kPa).  The required minimum air quality rating is ISO 8573.1 Class 2.4.2 (solids < 1 micron, pressure dew point < 38°F @100psig, and oil content < .08 ppm)

The following two compressor systems are commonly used with the CMT-330TC.  Other equivalent systems may be used also.  The compressor system must include an air dryer capable of ISO Class 4 or better (pressure dew point < 38°F @100psig).  Failure to use dry, non-lubricated compressed air that meets or exceeds the above requirements may cause damage to the machine and will result in THE WARRANTY BEING VOIDED.

System 1 - Traditional piston type compressor. Powerex AS0203 - 2 hp climate control compressor with built-in refrigerated dryer, electronic auto drain and starter.

System 2 - Rotary scroll type compressor.  The advantage to this type is minimum maintenance and very quiet operation (49 - 51 db). Powerex SES0308-208v with ACO100010 factory installed refrigerated dryer and auto drain.

2-1/2” lift capacity

4 different drill bit sizes (1/4”, 5/16”, 3/8”, 1/2"). Machine can be converted to a 2” maximum lift capacity for a wider range of available hole sizes (1/8” to 1/2"). 

Safety feature

Spindle motor automatically turns on when the pull-down lever is moved and automatically switches off when the lever returns to the up position.

Conveniently located chip collector cups

Located around the spindle, they include a sight gauge to signify when the cups are full and need to be emptied. The cups also serve as safety covers with interlock switches. When removed to change the drill bit or to empty the paper chips, power to the motor is locked out until the cups are replaced. 

Adjustable backgauge stops

The backgauge includes 4 adjustable stops for drilling multiple hole pattern jobs. Just flip the switch and move your pile to the next setting.
